King Charles is set to visit Canada for a highly symbolic trip underscoring his role as the nation’s sovereign—at a time when former President Trump has controversially suggested annexing the country as America’s 51st state.

At the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney, Charles will open Parliament in Ottawa on May 27, marking the first time a British monarch has performed this ceremonial duty since Queen Elizabeth II did so 68 years ago.
