EU Tea Imports Brew Strong Ties with Asia and Africa in 2024
Brussels, 2025 – The European Union steeped itself further into global tea trade in 2024, importing a total of 119,900 tonnes of tea from non-EU countries, according to the latest trade data.
The figures highlight strong and enduring trade relationships with key tea-producing nations in both Asia and Africa.
China led the way as the EU’s top tea supplier, contributing 24,400 tonnes, which accounted for 20% of total imports.
Close behind were India with 21,900 tonnes (18%) and Kenya, delivering 21,000 tonnes (18%), showcasing the importance of both South Asian and African markets in meeting European demand.
Sri Lanka also played a significant role, supplying 19,400 tonnes, equivalent to 16% of the EU’s total tea imports.
These four nations together accounted for over 70% of all tea imported into the EU in 2024, underscoring the bloc’s reliance on traditional tea-producing regions for its supply of black, green, and specialty teas.
With #tea consumption in Europe remaining steady and specialty teas growing in popularity, trade ties with major producers are expected to remain strong. The continued diversity of suppliers also reflects Europe’s appetite for a wide variety of flavors and blends, from #Chinese green tea to Kenyan black.
As global demand and climate conditions continue to shape agricultural exports, the EU’s evolving tea trade will be closely watched by both consumers and economists alike.
