In Three Years of War, Almost 7 Million Ukrainians Have Fled
Nearly 7 Million Ukrainian Refugees Registered Worldwide
According to the latest data, nearly 7 million Ukrainian refugees have been registered across Europe and beyond since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports that the majority have sought refuge in Germany, followed by Russia, Poland, and the Czech Republic. Both Germany and Russia have each registered over one million Ukrainian refugees, while Poland has registered slightly fewer.
In addition to those who have left the country, the UNHCR estimates that 3.7 million Ukrainians remain internally displaced within Ukraine. While over one million individuals are believed to have returned to Ukraine since the conflict began, recent trends show a decline in returns. In 2024, only about 9 percent of refugees surveyed reported plans to return. Some individuals have also returned temporarily but later left the country again.
Demographic data show that 59 percent of registered Ukrainian refugees are women and 41 percent are men. Children account for 31 percent of the refugee population, and 6 percent are aged 65 or older.
Beyond the top host countries, significant numbers of Ukrainian refugees have also been registered in the United Kingdom and Spain—each hosting over 200,000 people. Other countries, including Romania, Italy, and Slovenia, have received between 130,000 and 180,000 Ukrainian refugees each.
