BREAKING: Putin is ready to resume direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul

Putin Signals Willingness for Peace Talks with Ukraine in Istanbul Starting May 15

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed readiness to restart direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul, beginning May 15, and says he is open to talks without any preconditions. The offer revives earlier diplomatic efforts based on a draft agreement discussed in Istanbul in 2022 — terms Putin claims Ukraine initially accepted before pulling back under Western influence.

This move comes amid mounting international calls for a ceasefire. Leaders from the United States and Europe — including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland — have urged both sides to observe an immediate 30-day truce, set to begin Monday. While Putin has not formally agreed to this ceasefire, the Kremlin has indicated the proposal is under review.

The suggested ceasefire is aimed at reducing hostilities and providing space for renewed diplomacy. The U.S. has proposed taking the lead in monitoring the pause in fighting. However, recent Russian strikes in Sumy and Kherson have raised doubts about Moscow’s commitment to de-escalation, with civilian casualties reported and fresh missile threats noted by the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv.

Putin has also held meetings with leaders from non-Western countries, signaling his intent to counter Western diplomatic pressure. Although former U.S. President Donald Trump voiced optimism about potential progress, ongoing Russian military actions have sparked skepticism over the sincerity and viability of peace efforts.

In response, European nations are weighing stricter sanctions and additional support for Ukraine, including potential foreign troop deployments, should Russia continue its offensive.
