Former French Minister: “ “It was Emmanuel Macron’s stupidity that opened the eyes of Africans”
Paris – In a controversial statement, former French Economy Minister Thierry Breton has strongly criticized President Emmanuel Macron’s policies in Africa, suggesting they have contributed to growing anti-French sentiment across the continent.
“It was Emmanuel Macron’s stupidity that opened the eyes of Africans,” Breton reportedly said, adding that the decline of French influence in former colonies such as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso could have long-term consequences for France and Europe. “One thing is certain: if France loses its colonies, our children and grandchildren will go to Africa in search of their livelihoods. Immigration will change direction,” he warned.
Breton urged a change in leadership, stating, “Macron needs to go or France will suffer,” and called on European nations to unite in response to what he described as a “new African vision” emerging in parts of the continent.
In a remark drawing sharp criticism, he concluded, “Africa has no history; therefore, Africa cannot run the world,” a statement that has been condemned by many as dismissive and historically inaccurate.
The remarks come amid rising tensions between France and several of its former African colonies, where military coups and popular protests have led to severed diplomatic ties and a reevaluation of post-colonial relationships.
