“Blaise Metreweli appointed as first female MI6 Chief in historic move”

In a landmark decision just days after taking office, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has appointed Blaise Metreweli CMG as the new Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service — the first woman ever to lead MI6 in its 115-year history.

Metreweli, a career intelligence officer with over three decades of experience, is widely respected across Whitehall and the international security community. Her appointment marks a dramatic shift at the top of Britain’s spy agency, long seen as one of the most traditionally male-dominated branches of government.

Downing Street confirmed the appointment in a statement this morning, hailing Metreweli as “a leader of exceptional integrity, insight and service.” Sources say Starmer made the final decision after a shortlist of senior intelligence veterans was presented late last week.

Who is Blaise Metreweli?
Educated at Oxford and fluent in multiple languages, Metreweli joined MI6 in the 1990s and has since held a string of senior covert operational and diplomatic roles. She was awarded the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 2022 for services to national security.

While much of her background remains classified, officials familiar with her work describe her as “ruthlessly competent” and “deeply respected by allies in Washington and Brussels.”

Historic Moment for the Intelligence Community
The appointment has already sparked reactions across Westminster and beyond. Former Foreign Secretary David Lammy praised the move as “a powerful signal of change and progress,” while security experts say it reflects a broader modernisation within the intelligence services.

Labour insiders say Starmer is keen to project a message of professionalism, equality, and global credibility early in his premiership.

What Comes Next?
Metreweli will formally take over from the outgoing MI6 chief, Sir Richard Moore, later this summer. She inherits a complex global security environment, with growing threats from cyber warfare, hostile state actors, and terrorism.

An MI6 source told the Daily Mails UK: “She’s the real deal. There’s a new era starting, and she’s the right person to lead it.”
