Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced Monday that he will resign, deepening political uncertainty after a far-right candidate secured a decisive victory in the first round of the country’s presidential election.

According to local media reports citing the presidential administration, an interim prime minister is expected to be appointed on Tuesday morning.

Ciolacu, who has led the center-left Social Democratic Party (PSD) government since 2023, is stepping down after PSD’s presidential candidate, Crin Antonescu, finished third in Sunday’s pivotal vote.
